Nigerian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology marks WHO Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action
Abuja, Nigeria – November 17, 2024
Today, on the World Health Organization (WHO) Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action, the Nigerian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (NSCCP) reaffirms its commitment to the global movement to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. This year’s theme, Elevating Frontline Health Workers: Transforming Global Commitments into Lifesaving Actions, resonates deeply with our mission. We recognize the critical role that frontline health workers play in the fight against cervical cancer.
Their dedication and hard work are essential in achieving the WHO’s targets of vaccinating 90% of girls with the HPV vaccine by age 15, screening 70% of women with a high-performance test by age 35 and again at 45, and treating 90% of women with cervical disease. As the President of NSCCP, I am proud to highlight our ongoing efforts to improve cervical cancer prevention, screening, and treatment in Nigeria. Our society has been at the forefront of improving healthcare workers’ capacity to deliver to these areas.
On this important day, we call on all stakeholders, government agencies, healthcare providers, non-governmental organizations, and the public— to join us in our efforts to eliminate cervical cancer. Together, we can make a difference and save lives. Let us honour the frontline health workers who are the backbone of our healthcare system and continue to support their invaluable contributions.
