Nigerian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology marks WHO Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action

Today, on the World Health Organization (WHO) Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action, the Nigerian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (NSCCP) reaffirms its commitment to the global movement to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.

This year’s theme, Elevating Frontline Health Workers: Transforming Global Commitments into Lifesaving Actions; resonates deeply with our mission. We recognize the critical role that frontline health workers play in the fight against cervical cancer.

HPV SCREENING AND VACCINATION: A Powerful Duo Against Cancer

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to various cancers, including cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, and vaginal. To combat this, a two-pronged approach is crucial: regular HPV screening and vaccination.

Dr. Paul Jibrin, VP NSCCP, Rest in Peace

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of the Vice President of the Nigerian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, Dr. Paul Jibrin, which occurred on Thursday 31st October 2024. Paul was a distinguished pathologist, who was committed to advancing cervical cancer prevention and care. His contributions have been invaluable to our society and the medical community. We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Jibrin’s family, loved ones and the entire NSCCP community during this difficult time.

May his dear departed soul rest in peace.

National Task Force on Cervical Cancer Elimination Inauguration – Call to Action

Dear Members of the Nigerian Society for Colposcopy & Cervical Patholog, I hope this message finds you well. Today, I write to you with a renewed sense of urgency and purpose, inspired by the recent inauguration by the Honourable Minster of State for health, Dr. Tunji Alusa of the National Task Force on Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE). The task force is chaired by Professor I.F. Adewole, former Honourable Minister for Health, and I am honoured to be a member. The NTF-CCE has been set an ambitious yet achievable goal by the Federal Government of Nigeria: to screen 50% of eligible women with a high-performance test, at least once in their lifetime and to treat 100% of precancerous lesions detected by 2027.

NSCCP President, Dr. Yinka Olaniyan, appointed into National Task Force on Cervical Cancer Elimination ( 19TH August 2024 )

The Nigerian Society for Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology (NSCCP) is pleased to announce that our President, Dr. Olayinka Olaniyan, has been appointed to the National Task Force Committee for Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE). This appointment comes as part of the federal government’s concerted efforts to combat cervical cancer in Nigeria.

REPORT: NSCCP BASIC COLPOSCOPY TRAINING COURSE ( 2nd – 5th July 2024 )

From July 2nd to 5th, 2024, the NSCCP hosted a four-day bootcamp on basic colposcopy, featuring experienced faculty from across the country. The course was held at the Skills Acquisition Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja Nigeria. The course objectives were to;

i. Understand the role of high-risk HPV genotypes in the pathophysiology of cervical cancer.
ii. Understand the physiology of the colposcopic assessment procedures.
iii. Understand the technique of manipulating the colposcope.
iv. Recognize the colposcopically normal and abnormal cervix and appropriately select areas of the cervix for biopsy.
v. Understand and apply current risk-based management guidelines for abnormal cervical cancer screening results and precancerous conditions.

MSD GLOBAL HPV VACCINATION EDUCATION BANGKOK, THAILAND, SEPTEMBER 20-21, 2023

Members of the NSCCP and the NPHCDA represented Nigeria at the 2023 MSD Global HPV Vaccination Education Forum held 20-21 September, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Discussions surrounding the proposed roll out of the single dose quadrivalent HPV vaccination of multi age cohort of 17 million eligible girls come October 2023 was extensively discussed. The first phase shall include 15 states and FCT while remaining states shall roll out in the first quarter of 2024. This is broad step to lead Nigeria to achieving the WHO 90-70-90 Global Elimination target for cervical cancer by 2030.

NSCCP BASIC COLPOSCOPY TRAINING COURSE, ABUJA. MAY 9-12, 2022

The NSCCP conducted a Basic Colposcopy Training Course at the National Hospital Abuja May 9th-12th 2022. The course was attended by 50 participants made up of consultants, resident doctors, general practitioners, and nurses. It was a four-day course comprising interactive didactic lectures and hands on experience on colposcopy and related services. Faculty comprised experienced practitioners, both local and international who shared their vast experience in the practice of colposcopy.

The NSCCP has submitted a bid to host the IFCPC conference in Abuja, Nigeria in 2026. This would be the first time this conference is held in Africa, which is the hotbed for cervical cancer. Please support our bid!
