What is Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. It is usually recommended after an abnormal screening result, such as a Pap smear or VIA.
The procedure uses a colposcope, a special microscope placed outside the body to provide a magnified view of the cervix.
What happens during the procedure:
You lie on an exam table like during a pelvic exam
A speculum is inserted to open the vagina
The colposcope stays outside your body
A mild vinegar solution may be applied to highlight abnormal cells
If needed, a biopsy (small tissue sample) is taken for testing
You may feel slight discomfort or a mild burning sensation, but it is generally safe and quick.
