What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is a preventable cancer involving the cervix – the lower part of the womb. It can cause symptoms such as abnormal bleeding following sexual intercourse or inbetween periods. Most cases are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV).  Prevention of cervical cancer is by regular screening and vaccination in young girls. Treatment of the cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or a combination of these.
